The estate

38°46′ N · 9°29′ W

Ostrelle began as a lighthouse keeper's farm. Ninety years on it is still a quiet place: no lobby, no queue, just a key on a linen cord and the sound of the sea through the pines.

The keeper's family farmed this headland for four generations. We have restored their house, their garden and their lighthouse, and added a handful of rooms made from the same stone.

There are never more than seventy guests on forty hectares. Most days you will meet more pines than people, and that is rather the point.

Stay

Suites and villas,
set apart

Every room looks at the sea or the forest, and most at both. None of them looks at another.

All rooms and villas

Slow tides

A still sea under a deep blue sky at dusk

The day here is set by the water: a swim at low tide, lunch when the boats come in, a fire on the point when the light goes.

A day at Ostrelle

From first light
to the last fire

  1. A silhouette against a soft sunrise sky

    06:40

    A swim before sunrise

The cove is still in shadow and the water is clear to the bottom. The sauna on the rocks is already warm.

  2. Lemons on a terrace table above the sea

    09:30

    Breakfast on the terrace

Figs from the old wall, eggs from the farm, coffee for as long as you like.

  3. Olive branches over the coast in warm light

    13:00

    Lunch by the water

Grilled fish, a cold white wine and the afternoon ahead of you, with nothing in it.

  4. Smooth black stones on a person's back

    16:30

    The stone spa

Basalt stones from the beach, oils pressed from the garden, a treatment room that faces the pines.

  5. A dark dining room lit by candles

    20:00

    Dinner by candlelight

Salt's tasting menu follows the day's catch. The dining room is lit by nothing but candles.

  6. The Milky Way over dark rocks by still water

    23:00

    Stars over the headland

The lighthouse is the only light for miles. On a clear night the Milky Way reaches the sea.

Guest words

We have stayed in a great many beautiful hotels. Ostrelle is the only one where we forgot, for a whole week, that we were in a hotel at all.
Helena and Marc · Headland Villa, September
The lamps lit at dusk, the bread still warm at breakfast, the silence. Every detail had been thought about, and none of it was ever announced.
Sofia L. · Lantern Suite, February
Our children still talk about the cove at low tide and the boat to the caves. We have booked the same week for next year.
The Whitfield family · The Keeper's House, August
I came to write and did more of it in five days than in the previous five months. It's the quiet. And the window seat.
Daniel O. · Cliff Suite, November
