The Estate
A farm, a lighthouse
and forty hectares
of pines

Since 1931
38°46′ N · 9°29′ W
The first keeper arrived with a cow, a cart of stone and orders to keep the light burning. His great-granddaughter still lives on the estate and keeps the garden.
We bought the estate from the family in 2016, on the condition that nothing would be built that could be seen from the sea. It took six years to keep that promise.
Every new room is built of the estate's own stone, by the masons who rebuilt the lighthouse wall. Every old one was restored rather than replaced.

Our story

1931
The keeper's farm
A house, a barn and a light on the point. The family grew potatoes in the shelter of a wall they built by hand.

2016–2022
Six slow years
We restored the house and the barns, cut the Cliff Suites into the rock and planted a thousand pines.

Today
Still a farm,
still a light
The garden feeds the kitchen, the lighthouse still turns, and the keeper's great-granddaughter still decides when the figs are ready.

Guest words
We have stayed in a great many beautiful hotels. Ostrelle is the only one where we forgot, for a whole week, that we were in a hotel at all.
The lamps lit at dusk, the bread still warm at breakfast, the silence. Every detail had been thought about, and none of it was ever announced.
Our children still talk about the cove at low tide and the boat to the caves. We have booked the same week for next year.
I came to write and did more of it in five days than in the previous five months. It's the quiet. And the window seat.
